How Do I Install A World of Warcraft Addon?

My friends have all these cool features and stuff on their World of Warcraft interface screen and mine is just plain. What are these and how do I install them so I can use them on my computer.

What it sounds like to me is that your friends have WoW interface addons installed. Addons give you a lot more features and allows you to do many things that you can not do with just the basic World of Warcraft interface.

Now that is cleared up it really is pretty simple to install them on your copy of the game.

First things first, you must find out which addon you want to install. This really is the hardest part of the whole process as there are many, many different World of Warcraft addons that you can use. The tool I use for this first part is probably the biggest WoW addon site on the internet….Curse Gaming.

Next thing of course is to download the addon you have chosen and I have found that saving the addon zip file into your World of Warcraft directory can help you keep them organized. I actually save mine into:

C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Interface\Addons

After getting it saved you basically just have to unzip the addon file and it will add directories to your Addons folder which hold the actual addons. That basically installs the addon for use.

Just go in game and load it up to check out all the features of the addons you just installed. Have fun with it and I am playing around with video so I might get a video made for this to make it easier to see how it’s done.

you say that to use it you just go in game and open it up

    What does that mean?

  2. Apadwe says:

Hey Max, sorry I didn’t make that clear. It seems like I also used some of the wrong wording.

Once you install the addon it will automatically load when you login to your character. Titan panel does this. Some of the other addons right require you to type some command in the chat screen to be activated or some require certain buttons to be pressed.

Most of the addons I have ran across will actually load automatically, so if you have went through and installed an addon like I said above and it doesn’t seem to load up automatically you might want to look for a readme.txt file or an instruction file that will give you the commands you need to start up the addon.

This hopefully clears it up a bit but if it doesn’t just let me know and i’ll see what I can do to help out.

um i did all that it says to download the addons and they just wont show up in wow…anysuggestions?

  4. Apadwe says:

    Hey Eman,

When you login and get to the character selection screen if the addons are installed properly on the bottom left you will see a button you can clicked called Addons.

Click that button and make sure they somehow didn’t get disabled. If after doing that they are not disabled and still will not show up be sure to check for any readme.txt files that would give you the commands you need to load it up once in-game.

I’m not computer savy at all, I downloaded the addon for the coordinates, Cartographer I believe is what I downloaded. Even after reading this I still have no clue how to install it, can you help out any?

  6. Apadwe says:

    Hey Dale,

I have noticed that quite a few people are still having issues with installing addons and I will be able to create a video showing step-by-step on how to do it but that will not be ready until the end of next week.

From 1-70 ive been playing without add-ons, but ive recently wanted to get the cordinate add-on and atlas loot add-on. When I put them in my addons folder after i downloaded them, and then opend WoW and in the bottom left corner there was no addon button, i tried doing this multiple times without success. Got any idea whats wrong?

  8. Apadwe says:

    Hey Zaiden,

What it sounds like to me is you didn’t unzip the files before placing them in the Addons folder. Unzip them and it should have the Addons button show up in the game.

  9. Scrumpydee says:

when i click in the bottom left it comes up ‘incompatible’ next to the minimap

Some people have said i need to change a number in a file using notepad to make it work with my patch, but what number should i change it to? i have version 2.1.1 if that helps

  10. Apadwe says:

If it is coming up as incompatible you will need to download a newer version of the addon. You want to make sure the addon is compatible with patch 2.1.0. If it just says out-of-date just hit load out-of-date addons on the addons screen.

You didn’t say which addon you were trying to install but if you are trying to install the Cartographer addon here is a link to the Curse Gaming website to a version that is compatible with WoW patch 2.1.0.

Just go there and click on “Download for World of Warcraft 2.1.0″ which is right above the advertisement.

After installing this one you should be good to go!

Thank you sooo much for the walkthrough to install the addons. I feel like such a noob, but this is the first time i’ve tried to do anything extra to my WoW, so I was really in the dark. This is the only place I found that would actually walk you through the process step by step. Thank you especially for the video! :)
