Can I Become Addicted To World of Warcraft?

I hear a whole lot about people becoming addicted to World of Warcraft and I am kinda afraid that I myself will become addicted as well if it is possible. I don’t play as much as a lot of people do for that very reason. Anyway, my main question is can I really become addicted to World of Warcraft and if it is how can I protect myself from becoming addicted?

Some people do believe it to be true that you can become addicted to WoW. I used not believe it until I saw how it started to affect some of my in-game and real life friends. We would all joke about becoming addicted to WoW and not really believing it but…well it did take a toll on some friends of mine. One thing you have to remember is you can become addicted to almost anything…work, TV, alcohol, games, etc.

For one it is a really serious issue that WoW players are really starting to become aware of it and all the trouble it can cause. Some people will tell you it comes from low self-esteem, or from younger players because their parents let them play all night and don’t care.

From what I have seen it really hits home to young married couples and older males (probably over 26). In reality though no one is safe from the potential of becoming addicted.

I actually did start to struggle with this a little bit. Some things that helped me didn’t help out my friends but they worked for me. First thing was to limit my playtime. This really didn’t have a huge affect on me besides making me angry I couldn’t play for 10-12 hours at a time.

The one thing that really helped me out the most was finding something away from the game to do that I enjoyed. For me it was building websites and entering that world which has helped suck me out of my little own WoW world. After a while it let me enjoy playing WoW again and didn’t make it seem like a job and something that I MUST do all the time. It really put the fun back into the game.

The main thing to remember is that it just is a game and to have fun playing it. Just remember that real life will be knocking at your door. This game is just for entertainment only and if you keep the attitude of that you should be fine.

I just started playing & my friends are already calling “intervention.” I think I really am getting addicted. Look what I am doing at work… reading & playing on WoW related websites.

    oh, anyone can get addicted.
    it doesn’t take much.
at first, you might be unsure if you like the game or not, considering it takes a while to get used to..
but once you get used to it..
    bam.
soon, people will think you died because you never leave or talk to anyone irl.
    :D

    Well I’m kinda addicted
As in I love to play — if I don’t, I’m not too bothered as long as I’m doing something good
And I love to get out of the house, for work OR play
Yet I can easily play for 10 hours a time
I think I’ve got the best of both worlds, really :P

YOU CAN DEFINATELY BECOME ADDICTED!! I don’t know what to do about my sis. She spends 8-10 hours daily on this stupid game. She is soOOO addicted that she forgets to eat & in the matter of months has dropped from a size 14 to a 3. This is super scary!!!!!!! If you are worried you will get addicted – DON’T START PLAYING!!!!!! Hopefully my sis will come to her senses before she is down to childrens sizes- she is in her mid 30’s. I think she has lost touch with reality.

I think it’s important to really think about what the word “addicted” means. A true addiction means you cannot function without it, when you’re not around it you’re craving it to the point where you get grouchy, angry, and jittery. Simply playing it for hours on end does not necessarily mean you are addicted, it just means you really like playing it. There’s nothing wrong with playing for hours on end if it’s what you like to do — as long as it doesn’t get in the way of the other responsibilities you’ve chosen to have in your life. I.e., friends, work, family, significant others. As soon as you start breaking commitments to them, I’d say that’s when you should become concerned.

I mentioned in passing that I started playing WoW to some folks a few weeks ago, and their immediate reaction was, “woah! don’t get addicted!” The stigma of addiction is automatically associated with this game, so it gets thrown around WAY to easily. Stop for a moment, and explain to others, what addiction truly means.

    Hi guys.

I was addicted.. from age 10-13!

i was playing when school was done… to midnight.. Yes…

I started getting really mad when i lost playing arena games ( i had a lvl 70 druid and a lvl 70shaman)

And my family got the punishment from that…
I often yelled at them.. :(

I was playing like 4-10 hours..

My dad made that i could NOT play on summers… And i hated him for that…

But in the summer time.. I felt like much happier..

But i started playing again in the winter..

And that was around 10-12 hours…

It ended up that my dad delted my account.. Well, im happy that he did. this was going too far..

But now im 14. And i started playing. I dont get these huge mood swings anymore…

i play around 2-4 hours a day now due to homework and school.

Just dont start playing under 14… IT GETS MESSY!!

Id say dont start playing it unless you really do have a balance in your life – atm i am like recovering from a deadly wow addicting lol.. my 3 years of playing wow have caused me to stop eating, sleeping, even dropped out of school because of the addiction..
the day i actually noticed how bad it was and that i needed to stop playing this was when i was in the hospital being fed from tubes and all that crap

but thats just me all addictions are different, somehave it worse then others

I’m only gonna start playing WoW when I’m retired, because then I’ll really have nothing better to do. Haha.
