What Is Kiting and How Do I Do It?

I just starting playing and I here a lot of people talk about kiting mobs….i’m not sure what they mean when they say that. So what is kiting and how can I do it?
Most new players to the World of Warcraft have no idea what ‘kiting’ is, so don’t worry. And, they end up learning it before they even realize that they know it. Kiting is when you lead a mob around, killing it where you want to. Say that you want to clear out a room or area, but there is a large concentration of mobs there, and you can’t simply run in and kill them all with one blow. So, you target one, and pull it to a safe distance to kill it, so you don’t aggro the other mobs. Eventually, you will end up with a large pile of bodies where you led them out to kill them. You have probably already done this several times and not even realized that you were kiting a mob.
Kiting can be used for both safely eliminating a large group and just for fun. By kiting large concentrations of mobs, you can clean out an entire area without aggroing the whole area. And, by doing it for fun, you can pile bodies up, or line them up just to make a point. If you still aren’t sure that you know how to kite, you can always head out to a lower level area and practice kiting until you are good at it before you take on mobs that are higher level than you. Learning how to kite well will make you an asset to any group and it can make some great videos and screen shots!

its a group of high lvl players get together to lead an elite monster into a place i think, im not sure im only lvl 21 soz
Well can’t it be like this as well?
Say you’re on your own and you want to kill an elite. You then kite it around by using some kind of slowing, running to safe distance, shooting on the mob, slowing it again, running again and so on.
Way back when I was leveling my mage up to the mid 40’s I never really did much kiting. That’s because I used to have improved arcane missiles. I used to spam it and I didn’t care if I was up close since I wouldn’t get any interruptions casting it. But when I respecced to frost around level 45, that’s when I had to learn to kite and learn it well. Being frost was perfect for kiting because of the slowing effects and the nice procs of frostbite. Nice crits too from shatter. It’s a skill all mages have to learn by heart because it’s at the heart and soul of how mages really fight especially when solo. Of course other classes like hunters make excellent kiters.
Kiting is as the name suggests making your enemy look like you’re flying him like a kite. You do that by constantly keeping your distance as it follows you around while you’re hitting it. So basically you’re hitting it, maybe applying some DoT’s if you have any and then back away or run away then hit it again. So on and so forth until it’s dead. Of course there’s fear kiting which lock and priests do. That’s when they DoT up the enemy and cast fear so that they’re running around like mad while the DoT’s eat them up.
Cheers.
Kiting can be fun too, a group kited a Fel Reaver into Shatt over the weekend – made the whole city shake. The world dragon in Duskwood (Ysondre, or whoever happens to be in) has made visits to Stormwind. The key on long kites is to have some form of movement enhancement (+speed to boots via enchant) or way to slow the mob (I use CoE on my lock).
